A vinyl base roll, like a checkerboard design, can often be picked up cheaply in the stores of local flooring (especially for a small area where you could get away with an offcut) and just laying on top the existing floor, attached only to the board with carpet tape (check that it does not mark the existing floor in an inconspicuous corner)
