To make the most of the corridor, Jane Higgins designer installed storage under the stairs. The cupboards were quite shallow, so Higgins built stairs on the outside of the railing, creating a multi-use display space and storage of electricity.

Before work began, the hall was closed and dark. There were originally two separate reception rooms, while Higgins was the closest to the kitchen struck through in the hall and opened the expanded kitchen to create a more much brighter space , open plan. The front reception room was left intact.

a oiled oak worktop is a key element of the design. "The oak was always defined," says Higgins. "From there, we set about choosing the rest of the color palette. We wanted something a darker tone in contrast with the oak.

The Belfast sink is large and very deep. It was designed to be placed under the work plan and the additional emphasis of oak gives him under a self look a lot more, tying in well with the rest of the kitchen. The contrast of crisp white porcelain with oak and dark gray is striking, and seemed "quite graphic in the background," says Higgins .

Rather than continue the long row of cabinets, however, Higgins chose to connect with open oak shelves, guiding the eye nearly as fitted and add interest in the simple diet.

Open shelves also continued in the low-level cabinets for a more casual look. Articles are now exposed and near the oven and hob area.

large, freestanding, full-height unit looks almost like a wardrobe, and provides most of the storage in the kitchen. Food, cutlery, pots and pans are all hidden here.
The large fridge-freezer, another key element of memory, is perfectly nestled in the corner under the stairs. Oak tray above it a convenient place to store cookbooks and odds and ends.
